I guess I should’ve called first and checked. But it was a weekday afternoon! It never occurred to me that they might be closed. But it turns out (that) they close every Monday

며칠 전에 차에 문제가 생겨서 공업소에 가져 갔어요. 저희 동네에 유일한 공업소에요. 근데 문을 닫은 거예요. 제가 먼저 전화를 해서 확인해야 했던거겠죠? 근데 평일 오후였어요! 영업을 안할 수도 있다는 것은 생각지도 못했어요. 근데 알고보니 월요일마다 쉬더라고요. 

I had a problem with my car the other day so I took it to the mechanics, the only one in my neighborhood. But they were closed! I guess I should’ve called first and checked. But it was a weekday afternoon! It never occurred to me that they might be closed. But it turns out (that) they close every Monday.

 

1. 며칠 전에 차에 문제가 생겨서 공업소에 가져 갔어요. 저희 동네에 유일한 공업소에요.

I had a problem with my car the other day so I took it to the mechanics, the only one in my neighborhood.

2. 근데 문을 닫은 거예요.

But they were closed! (문을 닫아 영업을 안하는 상태)

↔They were open. 문을 열었었어요, 영업을 하고 있었어요.

 

They are open 에서 open은 형용사(그들이 영업을 안하는 상태를 나타냄)

They open에서 open은 동사(영업을 안하는 동작을 표현)

 

3. 제가 먼저 전화를 해서 확인해야 했던거겠죠?

I guess I should’ve called first and checked.

 

I guess 사고를 하는 과정을 표현할 때(뉘앙스 차이 이해)

should have p.p ~을 해야 했었다

 

4. 영업을 안할 수도 있다는 것은 생각지도 못했어요.

It never occurred to me that they might be closed.
